The 10 hottest Nigerian rappers of 2012

Ice Prince
There was a sharp decline in the release of Hip-Hop materials in 2012, notwithstanding, a handful of rappers managed to do us proud.
Here is our top 10 list for the hottest rappers in Nigeria  of 2012….
10. PHYNO: The Igbo-speaking rapper proved his worth in 2012 releasing the duet ‘Ghost mode’ with Olamide, bagging three nominations at The Headies, and then collaborating with Illbliss on ‘Amanchi Kwanu’.
9. D’PRINCE: The MAVIN act started this year with controversies over his actual record deal with former label Mo’Hits but bounced back with yet another banger ‘Take banana’ off the MAVIN compilation ‘Solar Plexus’. He finally released his debut ‘FRENZY!’ featuring the likes of M.I, Wizkid and others.
8. MODENINE: Nigel Benn didn’t drop his long awaited album in 2012 due to record label issues but turned it up with two mixtapes ‘Occupy The Throne’ and ‘Alphabetical Order’ with XYZ. He was one of the judges at the ‘Nokia Don’t Break the Beat’ rap competition which led to his verbal face-off with female rapper Muna that put him on the headlines for weeks before they eventually squashed it an Industry Nite gig.
7. ILLBLISS: The ‘Ibo Boy’ finally returned with his A-game in 2012 after a subtle absence. Although he spent most of the year grooming R&B singer Chidinma who is currently under his Goretti label, he released his ‘Oga Boss’ album with the hits ‘Anamachi Kwanu’ feat Phyno and Heartbeats feat Banky W.
6. NAETO C: Mr Super C kept it pushing this year, the most remarkable thing was signing on as a Hennessey Artistry headliner along with M.I. He also released his ‘Tony Montana’ single and remix with a big budget video featuring D’banj. Away from music a bit; he tied the knot with his beau Nicole at a high society wedding.
5. REMINISCE: In 2012, Mr Remilekun Safaru finally got the respect he’s been clamouring for by working hard on his skills and street image. Being one of the two Yoruba-lingo rappers to dominate this year, Remi pulled stunts with the release of his debut ‘Book of Rap Stories’ which brought the street anthems ‘Kako bi chicken’ and ‘2musssh’. He dedicated two weeks throwing jabs at another rapper Vector and spent the latter part of the year performing outside the country.
4. M.I:  Jude Abaga takes fourth spot for releasing the ‘dopest’ mixtape of the year ‘Illegal Music 2’ which he launched on his website MIABAGA.com and renewing his contract as VP at his label Chocolate City in April (dispelling rumours he was leaving the label, following the launch of his Loopy Music label). He also was the the Hennessy Artistry co-headliner alongside Naeto C…

Top 10 producers of 2012

Don Jazzy and Sarz at the MAVIN HQ
In the Nigerian entertainment scene for 2012, music was definitely an on all-time high. Here are 10 music producers were the cream of the crop this year…
  1. DON JAZZY: It has been a very big and memorable year for Michael Collins. Breaking up with former music label partner D’banj, launching his own label, bagging major endorsement deals, we almost forgot his true talent – making music.  But Jazzy did make some notable contributions this year – solely producing the ‘surprise’ MAVIN album ‘Solar Plexus’ and a large chunk of younger brother’s debut ‘FRENZY.’ Don’t forget D’banj’s ‘Oliver Twist’ which blew up in Europe.
  2. SARZ: Osaretin Osabuohien used 2012 to fully establish himself, signing with Trybe Records. The spotlight turned to him in 2012, producing 99 percent of label boss eLDee’s ‘Undeniable’ album, working with Reminisce, EME, Banky W and more.
  3. COBHAMS ASUQUO: Alternative-Soul singers Timi Dakolo and Bez might have released their ‘Beautiful Noise’ and ‘Super Sun’ albums last year, but producer Cobhams enjoyed the accolades and praise in 2012 when their singles hit the airwaves. Cobby (as Banky W calls him) also played an instrumental role, producing the ballad ‘Rich and famous’ for upcoming artiste Praiz and threw in a late one ‘Yes/No’ for Banky W.
  4. SPELLZ: Most of the hits you heard in 2012 were birthed by this young talent. Working with 9ice (On point feat Wizkid), EME (Roll it, Don’t go there, London girl), Tiwa Savage (Folarin), Banky W (Good good loving) and 2face (Omo no dulling ft Dammy Krane, Rocksteady), need we say more?
  5. TEE-Y MIX: If he wasn’t acting as a judge at the Project Fame West Africa talent show, he was making hits for the likes of Naeto C (Tony Montana rmx ft D’banj), working closely with 9ice on his Bashorun Gaa LP (Everyday, Adigun Ojuwon’lo, ShakaShiki, Attitude, Pace Setter, 3310) and then bagging the ’Producer of the Year’ award at The Headies 2012.

Naeto C - Can you do it
Naeto C is ending the year with a new single after the success of his collaboration with D’banj on ‘Tony Montana’ remix.
The single titled ‘Can you do it‘ was produced by E Kelly (Wizkid – call my name, Waje – So Inspired) and has a pop feel to it even though Mr Super C stays on the rap lane. Nice tune…

Top 10 radio stations of 2012

wazobia
A number of Nigerian radio stations stepped up their game this year, from news coverage to presenting proper music charts and structured playlists. Check out our list of the 10 radio stations that need to be applauded in 2012.
In Alphabetical order…
BEAT FM 99.9: The urban radio station clearly leads the pack in 2012 with their style of presentation, show concepts and premiere of new music, leaning heavily on the personalities of some of their popular presenters such as Toolz, Gbemi, Olisa, and newcomer Osi Suave, who dominated the night time. Beat  FM is now expanding, with the first of many upcoming stations ready to roll out in Ibadan in a matter of weeks.
CITY FM 105.1: Re-launched in July 2012, CITY FM was bolstered by the inclusion of Tony Doe, Westsyde, JLuv and K-Show, who made a mass exodus from Radio Continental to the Ogba based radio station. There’s still room for improvement, but the crew have done pretty well despite their past financial problems.
CLASSIC FM 97.3: The one stop radio portal for the oldies took a giant leap this year, moving ahead of rival station Smooth FM.
COOL FM 96.9: Riding on the back of OAPs Freeze and Kaylah, Mannie and D Angels and Joyce, COOL FM kept it running tight in 2012. The station was able to keep the premium brand intact but still watered down their shows to accommodate the average listener. They also settled their legal battle with COSON, finally agreeing to pay artiste royalties. Add to that one or two controversial interviews with D’banj and Tonto Dike.
INSPIRATION FM 92.3: A fusion of slow paced music and pop, Inspiration FM garnered quite a following, and in 2012, Shola Thompson and the gang kept it thorough, catering to the multi-cultural community.
LAGOS TRAFFIC RADIO: Launched by the Lagos State Government in May 2012, the essence of its existence is to help ease the traffic congestion in Lagos. Almost every driver is now tuning in for traffic updates.
NIGERIA INFO 99.3: In just one year of existence, the ‘Talk, News and Sports’ station has become the go-to for current affairs and relevant info on sports, entertainment and more. Its style of presentation is a break from the norm…
RHYTHM FM 97.3: The seaside station continued with their brilliant presentation style – with IK Osakioduwa, Big Tyme and Omalicha leading the pack. Blending the old school with the new, their format of news casting and the use of in-house DJs Humility and Sose were some of their strong points in 2012. And they replicated the formular in stations spread across the country.
TOP RADIO 90,9: The ever energetic morning show ‘Area’ anchored by Tosyn Bucknor remains a big reason Top Radio makes the cut. With a more grounded appeal, Top Radio dominated this year.
WAZIOBA FM 95.1: With Yaw, Diplomatic OPJ and Lolo, Wazobia could do no wrong in 2012. Catering for a segment that was ignored for years, Wazobia has emerged a leader, and hit hit with mass audiences from Abuja to Kano, Port Harcourt and Lagos.
