NETPod: ‘My Market’ + ‘No Dulling’ – Mr 2Kay

After the succesfull debut single ‘Run this town‘ which has seen him gain a substantial amount of publicity, the Waterside boy better known as Mr. 2Kay is back.
Riding on the wings of Grafton Records, 2kay is finally ready to release his debut album ‘Waterside Boy‘, (26-02-2012) as he drops a couple of singles to whet our appetite.
My Market‘ will definitely make the club houses. Following the new ‘Afro-pop’ sound which has become a routine for Port Harcourt acts, 2kay’s almost-coarse voice sounds well on the Orbeat-produced song.
No dulling‘ which takes background instrumentation from US rapper Lil’ Kim’s ‘Lighter’s up’ isn’t a bad cut either. 2Kay professes his love for the streets and how he survives.

NETPod: ‘Bregedige’ – Terry G

Terry G in his studio…
I’ll keep chunking out music so they won’t forget about me‘, Terry G said in a recent interview.
As the world awaits his highly anticipated follow up mixtape ‘Lucifer‘ to his Terry Gzuz album, he has decided to whet appetites with singles from the  upcoming tape.
Terry G hasn’t swerved off his genre – loud, danceable and generally hyped up stuff that’s made him the king of wild life.
‘Bregedige’ is yet another one of Terry’s unmistakable sounds. He talks about how people would like to take advantage of others and even playfully takes slight jabs at the number one citizen of the country.

VIDEO: ‘Raindrops’ from 2face Idibia

2face has released yet another video off his ‘The Unstoppable; Intl. Edition‘ album. While we wait expectantly for another record from the multiple award winning  artiste, we will have to make do with this…
The song still sounds fresh even after three years after release. But the video, directed by Isaac Offei Awuah is certainly played out for an icon like Mr Idibia. Often, his videos portray him in a reflective mood, the concept is ‘overflogged’ and leaves you bored halfway.
It’s still nice to watch 2face in words and pictures though…

NETPod: Deejay Klem Presents Bonnie In ‘Odabo’

Knighthouse producer Deejay Klem has his mind set on achieving a certain level of respect with his musical production and we do believe he is on the right path. After previous releases like ‘AFROFUNKYDISCOSOUL’ have brought him to the limelight, he continues to shine…
He calls on upcoming singer, 20-year-old Bonnie to deliver a new single titled ‘Odabo’. A soulful number, this track is the first off a monthly ‘Deejay Klem Presents‘ series geared at showcasing the best young talents in the industry.
Klem understands his strength and relies strongly on it. Co-writing and producing, he joins Bonnie to deliver a rare kind of number – you won’t see most of the R&B singers dare this.

VIDEO: ‘Kedike’ – Starring Chidinma and Dammy Krane

As the days go by Chidinma keeps proving to fans and pundits that she is no flash in the pan. We’ve seen her push down the ‘talent show winner’ pressure with successful singles and with her signing up with Goretti/Capital Hill management, the future is looking good.
Her single ‘Kedike‘, a love song sees Chidinma shed off any inhibitions of emotional display. And with production from music-maker extraordinaire Cobhams Asuquo, one shouldn’t expect anything less than a good number. In what might be her best vocal performance so far, ‘Kedike’ surely pushes the limits.
The video expresses the love tale perfectly. Clarence Peters thinks out of the box and draws the three-minute clip closer to a more African content. Pop rookie Dammy Krane plays Chidinma’s admirer, suffice to say they both end up in each other’s arms…

Actress Halima Abubakar and family leaving Kano for good

The actress and her family have lived in the northern state of Kano all their lives, they even have businesses there but because of insecurity in the north, and especially after the multiple bomb blasts last week, which I hear came close to home, the actress has decided to relocate her family.

In April 2011, the building habouring Halima and her mother's bakery and restaurant, Godiya Confectioneries, was burned down during the riot that engulfed some parts of the north after the April 2011 elections.

Seyi – Murderer + Late Arrival (MIXTAPE DOWNLOAD)

Seyi is a Naija Pop/R&B artiste from the streets of South East London. He initially started out as a Gospel act but has made the switch to mainstream R&B. He has a mixtape out titled “Late Arrival“. The mixtape might be “arriving late” on notjustOk.com (I’ve had it for a hot min) but the wait is totally worth it, believe me.

VIDEO: Team Capital Presents “Fuel Doubler” Starring Tha Suspect

Someone please save Suspect from his unsubsidized madness abeg. LOL!!!
With the present buzz building over the first episode from the “SUBSIDY” short film that hit the internet barely a week ago, Garnered over 10,000 views in barely 2 days and turning the viral community bugging.
With television stations such as T.V.C., Channels & S.T.V. requesting for the short clip for airing, shows this short flick has touched the populace by depicting the social effects the subsidy removal act by the ruling government body can have in the society.
The buzz off the film has sent the production team back to the drawing board to cook up a follow up “The Fuel Doubler”, to further stress the social effects of the government act on its’ people.
In a few days the follow up will hit the internet again and subsequent episodes still under production will ensue.

Yung Hanz – Not Just Ok + One Chance + Love Me Now

Yung Hanz is one baddass rapper we’ve been following for about 2 years. The South-South rapper, who was featured as the “notjustOk Hype” back in August 2010, has been putting in lots of work in the studio (“Display” is still one of the sickest Naija hiphop songs).
Listen to these three 2012 singles “Not Just Ok”, “One Chance” and “Love Me Now”.

Yeankeyz ft. DJ Zeez – Faaji Lawa

Just as the title of the song suggests (when translated to English), Faaji Lawa (Na Enjoyment we de) is a feel good tune featuring DJ Zeez.
I hear songs that try to do what Yeankeyz did on this track a lot, but the artists behind those tracks always either overdo adlibs or do very little; making the song sound incomplete and unattractive.
What Yeankeyz has delivered here is a song that works well with his style of music. I am adding this to my playlist immediately. Go ahead and share your thoughts or feelings.

Ice Prince Collaborates With Jamaican Singer Gyptian

2011 saw a number of collaborations between Nigerian entertainers and their foreign counterparts. Chocolate City’s Ice Prince has now joined the list with his recent hook-up with Jamaican dancehall/Reggae act Gyptian.
Ice Prince seized the opportunity to work with Gyptian who flew into the country for a quick performance at the recently concluded Calabar Festival on Friday, December 30, 2011.
The acts recorded a remix to ‘Magician’, a single off Ice Prince’s debut record ‘Everybody Likes Ice Prince’.
We’ve been in talks with Gyptian before he flew in but they meeting in person just accelerated things. They have recorded a song but will be releasing it later’, Nanle, Ice Prince’s manager tells NET.
Nanle also tells NET that a video for the remix has already been shot. It was directed by Clarence Peters.
2011 was busy for the ‘superstar’ rapper; he released his debut album and performed in a quite a number of African countries and the UK.
Gyptian is credited with the monster calypso smash hit song ‘Hold yuh‘ and is signed to New York-based VP Records.
Other international collaborations that have taken place in recent times include ‘Mr Endowed remix’ by D’banj and Snoop Dogg, ‘Don’t dull remix’ by Wizkid and Akon, ‘Boogie down’ by Naeto C and HHP, ‘The way you are (remix) by Darey and Chamillionaire, and ‘Good time’ by J Martins and Cabo Snoop.

Inside Beyonce’s 5-Star Hospital Room

We all know how Jay Z and Beyonce tried as much as possible to keep the birth of their first child Blue Ivy Carter  away from the prying eyes of the media and general public.
As Bey’s EDD neared, the couple rented the entire fourth floor of Lenox Hill Hospital, on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for her delivery. The hospital’s management had instructed that all staff hand in their cell phones in an effort to caution ‘unauthorized photographs’ or clips of the mother and the ‘newly born’.
Reports say the hospital constructed a suite for VIPs which ‘looks like a Four Seasons penthouse’ and the room’s first occupant was Beyonce and co.
TMZ recently published photos of the room and here are some stunning features: There are 4 flat screen TV’s, state of the art electronics, a kitchenette, nice art, mahogany walls, plush furnishings and an extra bed!

Occupy Nigeria: Guess Who We Caught ‘Dressing Up’

Sir Shina Peters At DAY 3, Occupy Nigeria Protest
Sir Shina peters is gradually having his career back. Down for several years; especially since the tragedy of his participation in Abacha’s infamous ‘Million Man march’; the Afrojuju star is hugging the limelight again. He’s back in the concert arena, and working with his longtime producer and collaborator Laolu Akins on a new album that’s expected soon.
And when the mass protests began on Monday, we were too certain SSP would show up and identify with the people. He’s said he’s sorry for dining with Abacha; and, if you saw him taking off his clothes in the open at Ojota, so he can wear an occupy Nigeria T-Shirt before mounting the stage, you’d know he means it…

NETPod: ‘Excuse Me Sir’ – GT the Guitarman

‘Concious’ and ‘Outspoken’ – two words that best describe singer/guitarist GT the Guitarman.
The singer who is well known for passing socio-political messages through his songs has always made his music revolve round self awareness. At a time when Nigeria is re-evaluating its leadership, GT resurfaces (after a long period of time following his departure from former label Storm Records) with a new single called ‘Excuse me sir‘.
Surprisingly, GT delivers over a hi-tempo, pacey tune. ‘In the midst of pain, it’s a shame but we still have time to make a change‘, GT sings. The ambience the song provides satisfies the party poppers’ playlist yet carries a very strong message  - Change.

NETPod: ‘Knock, Knock, Knock’ – Lagbaja

Nobody understands how Lagbaja has managed to remain relevant over the years.
While other artistes engage their fans with radio/TV interviews, Twitter et al, the Africano star uses his most powerful tool – the message behind his music to captivate us.
Lagbaja’s twist of humour, sarcasm, social and moral standards never bores us and on his latest single ‘Knock, Knock, Knock’, which depicts love-gone-bad tale, his coarse yet melodious voice paints a vivid picture.
The video does justice as well….

Video: Pop or Pour Champagne? Davido Debuts ‘Dami Duro’

It’s about a year since Davido debuted with his ‘Back when’ single and video. It seems like ages now with his second single ‘Dami Duro’ hitting the airwaves and tearing up clubs.
The young pop singer can be quite energetic on stage and definitely brings the whole drama in his music videos;
The video for ‘Dami Duro’, directed by the ubiquitous Clarence Peters doesn’t fall out of place in comparison to the song. Lavish lifestyle (he even pours out the content of expensive drinks to prove his point), fast cars and women with heavy makeup – Davido tells us not to even think about stopping him – he’s from a line of wealthy men.

NETPod: ‘Setting P’ + ‘Lowkey’ – Banky W

y Osagie Alonge

It’s taken him about two years to release brand new singles for his numerous fans spread across and beyond but I guess it’s worth the wait.
The EME boss has been quite busy; grooming his label acts Wizkid and Skales and yes the results have been fruitful. But before we forget that the singer first made an entry to the scene with his music and not his business sense, he whets our appetite with two new singles Setting P and Lowkey, from his forthcoming album R&BW.
Setting P (which is a slang used to describe covert ways of initiating an intimate relationship with someone) is hard hitting with the drums. Banky‘s swift and melodious delivery does justice to Masterkraft’s up tempo beat.
Low key, produced by Sarz, takes on the opposite route; slow and classy, Banky reminds us why he is considered one of the best in his field. Not bad at all.

Banky W: ‘No Album From Me Until 9ja Settles Down’

Nigerian R&B singer and EME boss Banky W has pushed back the release of his new album in support of the ongoing nationwide strike.
Mr W was scheduled to release his fourth album ‘R&BW‘ on Valentine’s Day Tuesday, February 14, 2012. But he says he has put a halt on releasing any new materials including singles and videos until ‘things start to look better’.
In other news, #R&BW won’t be coming out on Feb 14th. I’ve suspended promoting/putting out new music until after things in 9ja settle down‘, @Bankyw tweeted.
Will drop singles and a video after things start to look better, but no more movement on #R&BW music. Some things r more important right now‘, he continued.
Banky W had marched along with protesters on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 from Maryland to the Gani Fawehinmi Park in support of the Occupy Nigeria protest.
The singer’s discography boasts of three previous albums: ‘Back in the Building‘, ‘Mr Capable‘ and ‘The W Experience‘.

SUBSIDY STRIKE: PHOTOS FROM DAY 4

By Victor Obot
DJ Atte, Omawumi and General Pype
The nationwide Labour Strike continued in its fourth day and more Nigerians came out en-masse to join the Occupy Nigeria movement with the sole intention of wanting the Federal government to revert the pump price of fuel to N65 per litre.
Our photographer paid a trip to Victoria Island where protesters including Nigerian entertainers made their way from Falomo to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Headquarters where they expressed their dislike for the station’s shameful coverage of the subsidy debate and protests.
Popular faces at the protest include Nollywood actors Kate Henshaw, Uche  Jombo, Ufuoma Ejenobor, musicians Sasha P, Omawumi, General Pype, Waje, Mr Kool, Ikechukwu, stand-up comic Ali Baba and  DJ Jimmy JATT.
We should not give up, we will fight to the end. We voted these people in, we are not their slaves‘, respected politician Pat Utomi said.
Meanwhile, protests continued in other parts of the country – with the numbers in Ojota, lagos, and Abuja totally unprecedented. There is still no sign of when the protests will end as negotiations between Labour and Federal government ended in deadlock tonight.
Check out a few photos below…

Occupy Nigeria: ‘Don’t Betray Our Trust’ Celebs Tell GEJ

Baba Suwe and Kunle Afolayan
‘Day 3 and We Are Not Leaving until Goodluck Answers Us’ read a poster a young boy carried yesterday, Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at the Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota Lagos, on the third day of the on-going Labour strike in reaction to the removal of Fuel subsidy in the country which took effect January 1, 2012.
Just like DAY 1, people gathered en masse to show support for the strike. Tens of thousands…
If anybody thought the attendance at the park on DAY 2 would probably be the highest, they will be surprised to see the number tripled. Yes, tens of thousands occupied the park eager to be heard as each person’s face bore its own frustrated look.
And as expected more celebs and dignitaries made their way to stage to either sing or encourage the crowd or do both…actors, singers, lawyers, doctors…you name it.
I never thought Nigerians can stand up against insensitive decisions. We trusted you, that’s why we voted for you, don’t betray our trust Goodluck’, Baba Suwe told the crowd.
The park which was already half-filled as at 9AM kept accommodating protesters as they strolled in even after noon. It was a busier affair at the park; some protesters carrying ‘made-up coffins’ with inscriptions on them, touts causing trouble at different places, food sellers setting up their goods, offering a quick meal, and marijuana sellers making big sales.
Actors Ayo Badmaus, Kunle Afolayan, Yomi Black, Toyin Aihmaku, Babtunde Omidina a.k.a Baba Suwe, Afrobeat acts Femi and Seun Kuti, Sir Shina Peters, pop singers AY.com, YQ, Skuki, Djinee, Fuji acts Saheed Osupa, Obesere, comedians Klint da drunk, Seyi Law and Princess are some of the entertainers who showed up at the protest on day 3.
Others include Segun Obe, Oritse Femi, Omobaba, Zee world, Klever Jay, Art-Quake, and Daddy Fresh who mingled with union leaders, pastors, Imams and lawyers on stage. Pastor Tunde Bakare, Chief Imam of Lagos State, Sheikh Garuba Ibrahim popular lawyers Festus Keyamo, Bamidele Aturu also made appearances.
In other parts of Lagos, at the Tafawa Balewa square, and at Falomo on Lagos island, Occupy Nigeria protesters also gathered in their thousands, all sending out same message to the federal government of Nigeria: revert the pump price of PMS to N65, cut excessive government spending, and eliminate corruption from the system.
The mass protest is going on simultaneously across the country, including the seat of power in Abuja. Citizens say they plan to continue today, even as a meeting between labour and government ended without any resolutions yesterday, as the federal government insists there’s no going back on the fuel subsidy removal.
There is no sign of the protesters calling it quits soon…

‘Wasteful Leadership Cannot Make Prudent Investments’ – Fela Durotoye

By Fela Durotoye
Since I got back into Nigeria yesterday, I have heard some preposterous arguments that the removal of the fuel subsidy will be justified by wise investments that will benefit all.
My response has been…How will a wasteful government suddenly realize the genius of prudence and making the right investment decisions simply because there is more money available from oil subsidy removal?
Will there be less graft and bribes involved in process of issuing the road contracts or power contracts?
Have we sought to honestly find every way we can plug wastage in our leaking economy before we ask a feeble populace to carry the burden of corruption and gross ineptitude of a gluttonous few?
Have the Presidency, the State & Local Governments and the Legislature discovered how to travel without a convoy of 20 cars to the airport?
Can the occupiers of these lofty positions act in honour as Barack Obama did in 2010 when he got every member of his cabinet to take a pay cut, starting with himself?
Within his first few days as British Prime Minister, David Cameron led the austerity cuts (upon his assumption) by cutting down his convoy to 2 cars and one outrider. The Members of Parliament in Britain are now only allowed 3rd class train tickets on official travel (as opposed to their traditional first class train ticket allowances). The Mayor of London now rides a bicycle to work.
Leadership by example!!!
How come our ‘leaders’ in government earn so much and still spend so much furnishing the same houses and offices they furnished with our money last year?
Do you furnish your office every year? Why should the President, Governor or Senate President?
Wasteful leadership cannot make prudent investments!!!!! Q.E.D
The change we need is not just policy. It’s in the quality of mind and persons at policy making positions.
That said, how will we effectively deliver sustainable desired-change?
History has taught us that governments increase fuel prices, the people fight, students riot, labour unions strike, and then after a couple of weeks, the government reduces the price but never to its original price…and everyone feels like a winner, but the poor know and experience the reality of the loss. Then we start the cycle all over again with another administration.
God bless everyone who has stood up against this unjust policy. I salute everyone who has risked their lives to Occupy Nigeria with the message that Enough is Enough.

Eedris Assaults Labelmate Jaywon

Seven years after the infamous airport altercation between Eedris Abdulkareem and G-Unit bodyguards, the troubled rapper has been involved in another major fight.
Multiple sources, including eye witnesses, have informed Nigerian Entertainment Today of a physical fight between two Kennis Music acts, rapper Eedris Abdulkareem and singer Jaywon.
Eedris and Jaywon amongst other artistes had attended and performed at a street carnival held in National Bank Estate, Satellite Town on Thursday, December 29, 2011.
Sources say after Jaywon’s performance, his excited fans had followed him to the bus which conveyed the acts to the show.
‘Eedris started insulting him. Jaywon didn’t want any drama, so he decided to get down from the bus so that things wouldn’t escalate’, an insider who would rather remain anonymous tells NET.
We’re told that didn’t stop Eedris from allegedly pouncing on the younger singer and raining blows on him as he stepped out of the bus. ‘Jaywon didn’t lift a hand and by the time Eedris was done, the poor boy had blood stains all over him‘, a source, who claims Jaywon was rushed to the hospital, told us last night.
Jaywon soon took to his Twitter account, saying ‘Funny how people that are supposed to be good role models turn out to be really ‘good’….#SMH’.
This iroko tree wasn’t planted by human so no evil shall befall me cuz am covered by the blood of the most high. #SMH’, he continued.
NET’s phone call to Jaywon was answered by the singer’s manager who confirmed that both acts were present at the carnival but says there was only a ‘misunderstanding’. ‘Jaywon is right now in Apapa for a show, he is fine’.
Those aware of the situation insist the unnamed manager is being economical with the truth.
Eedris is not new to brawls. On December 4, 2004, he was in a fight with G-Unit bodyguards aboard an ADC aircraft conveying the performing crew to Port Harcourt for the final leg of Star Megajam 2004. Eedris was occupying a business class seat reserved for 50 Cent.
The incident with 50 cent dented Eedris’ image, he became the media’s punching bag and poster child of irresponsibility. And his career suffered greatly for it.
Eedris did have something to say on his Twitter. ‘Don’t blv evrythn u read… Don’t blv rumours. Stay positive. 1luv’, @idris_Abdulkarm tweeted some hours ago.
I have no comments on that matter please’, label mate Capital F.E.M.I told NET in a phone conversation.
There was a misunderstanding but everything is under control’, KSB also spoke with NET.
Calls placed to Kennis Music boss Kenny Ogungbe didn’t go through and texts were not replied as at the time of this report.
