The late veteran rapper Dwight ‘Heavy D’ Meyers was buried yesterday Friday, November 18, 2011 at the historic Grace Baptist Church of Mount Vernon as announced earlier.
A handful of celebrities turned up at the tar-studded funeral service which also included Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett, rappers Jayz, Queen Latifah, Q-Tip, R&B singers Usher and John Legend, show promoter Don King and actress Rosie Perez. His parents Clifford Vincent Myers and Eulahlee Lee were also in attendance.
It wasn’t an all-solemn affair as some of the late rapper’s friend including longtime pal Diddy and Jay Z and Will Smith took turns to share memories while others laughed.
‘We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers’, read the note from the President Obama, according to the Rev. Al Sharpton, who quoted from it during the service.
Xea Myers, the 11-year-old daughter to the late rapper also spoke briefly as she told the congregation her dad was ‘still here, not in the flesh, but in the spirit’.
The service lasted for two and a half hours and the church was filled to capacity. Others who couldn’t make their way inside had to manage the front porch of the church which was immediately set up to accommodate them.
‘Silently he’s been influential in a lot of our careers. His love still lives on’, Usher said after the service
‘He became my friend. He became my brother, and I’m not talking about friend-brother like we cavalierly use the word, I’m talking about a real friend, a real brother. Somebody I shared my dreams and my secrets with, somebody that’s been there for me at my lowest point, my darkest hour when nobody wanted to be beside me’, Diddy said.
Heavy D who called himself the ‘Overweight Lover’ passed away in Los Angeles Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the age of 44. His family said the death was due to complications from pneumonia.
