Psquare, Wizkid, Vector emerge top winners at The Headies 2012

Wizkid at The Headies 2012
The 2012 edition of one of Africa’s most prestigious entertainment awards shows The Headies took place on Saturday, October 20, 2012, hosted by singer Omawumi and rapper M.I
The show, which took place at the expo hall of the Eko Hotel and Suites for the third time in a row, can be described as a mixture of sorts – depending on who and how you saw the show.
Rapper Vector might consider himself the biggest winner of the night; after receiving his first ever ‘Headie’ in the ‘Best Rap Single’ category for his hit ‘Angeli’ featuring 9ice, the lanky rapper also picked up the ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ award which was presented by the five-time winner of that category, Modenine.
The awards show saw Psquare return to the Headies’ honours list after a two-year hiatus. After receiving six nominations, the pop twin duo with their ‘Invasion’ album won not one, but two awards – in the ‘Album of the Year’ and ‘Best R&B-Pop Album’ categories. In addition, elder brother Jude Okoye also received the award for ‘Best Music Video,’ beating tough competition from Clarence Peters.
The biggest award of the night ‘Artiste of the Year’ went to EME signee Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun. The 22-year-old, who was the third and final act to walk away with two awards was also awarded the ‘Revelation of the Year’ award. ‘I want to thank you all for supporting me‘, Wizzy said as he picked up his second award.

Meanwhile, the MAVIN Records crew picked up awards for ‘Best Vocal Performance’ in both male and female categories – with Wande Coal’s ‘Private trips’ and Tiwa Savage’s ‘Love me 3x’ coming out tops respectively.
Surprise winners included May D, whoy beat Tiwa Savage, Bez and Wande Coal to win the ‘Best R&B Single’ for his dancehall-pop themed ‘Soundtrack.’ and Sound Sultan who beat Psquare, Sauce Kid in the ‘Best Collabo’ category for his duet with Flavour and Xcel on ‘Orobo’ remix.
The coveted ‘Next Rated’ award which comes with the special prize of a Hyundai Sonata was won by none other than Davido, who has had a fantastic run in the last year – releasing three number-one singles and subsequently a debut album – ‘Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis‘.
Highlights of the show were the live band performances from Bez and Praiz, who rendered their duet ‘Stupid song‘, Timi Dakolo who gripped the audience with his ‘Great nation’ song, and surprisingly rookies Burna Boy and Dammy Krane.
One couldn’t help but notice the absence of quite a number of celebrities (most especially the winners). Afrobeat maestro Femi Kuti, who was billed to be inducted into the ‘Hall of Fame’ and perform for the first time at a Nigerian awards show was also surprisingly absent.
The show however ended on a high note, with the EME all stars - Banky W, Wizkid, Skales, Niyola, Shaydee and DJ Xclusive delivering a heavy performance.
